The Taj Mahal is famously known as a mausoleum, and it houses the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, the beloved wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. In addition to Mumtaz Mahal, the tomb also contains Shah Jahan’s own grave, making it a poignant symbol of their love.
The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632, following Mumtaz Mahal’s death during childbirth. It took approximately 22 years to complete, involving thousands of artisans and laborers. The monument is not only a testament to architectural beauty but also a symbol of enduring love.
Inside the main mausoleum, visitors can find a beautifully decorated chamber that holds the intricately carved sarcophagi of both Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. Their actual graves are located in a lower chamber, which is not open to the public.
