In Markus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief, Max Vandenburg does not die. Throughout the story, he endures significant hardships as a Jewish man hiding from the Nazis, but ultimately he survives the events of the book. Near the end of the book, after the bombing of Molching, we learn that Max has been separated from Liesel and her family when he is liberated from a concentration camp.
