What is Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation is a standardized way of writing numbers that are either extremely large or extremely small. Instead of writing out long strings of zeros, which are prone to human error, scientists and mathematicians use a compact format based on powers of ten.

At its core, scientific notation follows this structure: a × 10ⁿ.

  • a (the coefficient) must be a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10.

  • n (the exponent) represents the number of places the decimal point was moved.

How It Works

To convert a standard number into scientific notation, you move the decimal point until only one non-zero digit remains to the left of it. If you move the decimal to the left, the exponent is positive. If you move the decimal to the right, the exponent is negative.

For example, 5,000 becomes 5 × 10³ because we moved the decimal 3 places to the left. Conversely, 0.005 becomes 5 × 10⁻³ because we moved the decimal 3 places to the right.

Real-World Examples

Scientific notation is essential in fields like astronomy and microbiology. An astronomer might describe the distance to a star as 4 × 10¹³ kilometers, which is far easier to read than 40,000,000,000,000. Similarly, a biologist measuring the size of a virus might use 1 × 10⁻⁷ meters, avoiding the confusion of counting multiple zeros after a decimal point.

Common Pitfalls

One common mistake is choosing a coefficient that is not between 1 and 10. For example, writing 50 × 10² is technically mathematically correct, but it is not standard scientific notation. You should always adjust it to 5 × 10³.

Another pitfall is forgetting the negative sign for small numbers. Always remember: negative exponents indicate a value less than one, while positive exponents indicate a value greater than ten.
