The Tripitaka, also known as the Pali Canon, is a collection of scriptures in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. It was not written by a single author, but rather it is the result of an extensive oral tradition that was later compiled into written form.
Initially passed down through generations, the teachings of the Buddha were memorized and orally transmitted by his disciples after his death around the 5th century BCE. Over the centuries, these teachings were finally written down in the Pali language during the 1st century BCE at the Fourth Buddhist Council in Sri Lanka.
The Tripitaka is divided into three
