Hippos are known for producing a variety of sounds, but one of their most distinctive calls is a loud, grunting noise often referred to as a ‘grumble.’ This sound can be heard both in and out of water. In addition to grunting, hippos also make a range of other vocalizations including honks, wheezes, and even explosive snorts.
The sounds serve different purposes; for instance, they communicate with other hippos, signal warnings, or establish territory. Interestingly, while they seem heavy and clumsy, hippos are actually quite vocal, creating a chorus of sounds that can resonate across their river habitats.
