King Tutankhamun, often referred to simply as King Tut, was not buried in a pyramid like many other pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Instead, he was laid to rest in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, specifically in KV62. This tomb was discovered in 1922 by the archaeologist Howard Carter.
The Valley of the Kings, located on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor, was a burial site for many pharaohs during the New Kingdom period. King Tut’s tomb is relatively small compared to others, but it is famous for the wealth of artifacts found within it, including the magnificent gold mask of the young king.
While pyramids were the grand burial structures used by earlier dynasties, the shift to rock-cut tombs like that of King Tut’s marked a change in royal burial practices in ancient Egypt. This decision may have been influenced by the desire for secrecy and protection from grave robbers.
