During the month of Elul, Jews engage in introspection and repentance in preparation for the upcoming Days of Awe. It is a time for self-reflection, prayer, and acts of kindness. The shofar (a ram’s horn) is blown every morning (except on Shabbat) to awaken the soul and remind people to return to their spiritual roots.
Elul is also a time for seeking forgiveness from others and making amends. The letters of the word ‘Elul’ are said to stand for the phrase “Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li”, which translates to “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine”, symbolizing the close relationship between God and the Jewish people.
