The former name of Croatia was the Kingdom of Dalmatia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I. Following the war, Croatia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which was later renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929. Over the years, the country went through various political changes and names until it declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, officially adopting the name Republic of Croatia.
