A ruptured ovarian follicle is commonly referred to as a Graafian follicle rupture or more simply, ovulation.
During a woman’s menstrual cycle, follicles in the ovaries mature and eventually one follicle will reach the point of ovulation. When this happens, the follicle bursts open and releases an egg into the fallopian tube, which is the process known as ovulation. This rupture is essential for reproduction, as it allows the egg to be fertilized by sperm if present.
Sometimes, if the follicle does not release the egg properly or if there is an abnormality, the rupture can lead to potential complications, which may require medical attention.
