The blobfish primarily feeds on a diet of soft-bodied animals that inhabit its deep-sea environment. Its diet consists mainly of:
- Sea Pens: These are soft corals that the blobfish can easily consume.
- Mollusks: This includes various types of snails and other shell-less sea creatures.
- Crustaceans: Blobfish also consume small crustaceans like shrimp and crabs that drift within their reach.
Blobfish use their semi-gelatinous bodies to their advantage in the pressure-heavy deep sea. They don’t have the energy to chase prey, so they tend to float and take advantage of whatever comes near them. This is why their diet largely consists of whatever small creatures that happen to drift by. They can simply absorb their food, making their feeding process quite energy-efficient.
