The two largest mountain ranges in the United States are the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains.
The Rocky Mountains, commonly known as the Rockies, stretch over 3,000 miles from northern British Columbia in Canada, through the United States, and down to New Mexico. This range is known for its rugged terrain, high peaks, and diverse ecosystems. Among its numerous notable peaks, Mount Elbert in Colorado stands as the tallest, reaching 14,440 feet.
On the other hand, the Appalachian Mountains extend about 1,500 miles from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador down through the eastern United States to central Alabama. The Appalachians are characterized by rolling hills and forested areas, and they have some of the oldest mountains in North America. Mount Mitchell in North Carolina is the highest peak in this range, standing at 6,684 feet.
Both mountain ranges not only dominate the geography of the continent but also play critical roles in climate, ecology, and human activity across the regions they traverse.
