The Earth’s lithosphere is divided into several large and small tectonic plates, which float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. The major tectonic plates include:
- Pacific Plate
- North American Plate
- European Plate (also known as the Eurasian Plate)
- African Plate
- South American Plate
- Indo-Australian Plate
- Antarctic Plate
In addition to these major plates, there are several smaller plates that also contribute to tectonic activity. These include the Caribbean Plate, Nazca Plate, Cocos Plate, Philippine Sea Plate, and others. Each plate interacts with its neighbors, leading to geological phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, and mountain formation.
