Just as chloroplasts are the organelles responsible for photosynthesis in plant cells, mitochondria serve as the site for cellular respiration in both plant and animal cells. During photosynthesis, chloroplasts capture sunlight and convert it into chemical energy stored in glucose. Conversely, mitochondria take that glucose and other nutrients to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is used as an energy source for the cell. Thus, both organelles play essential roles in energy conversion processes in living organisms, making them functionally analogous in their respective processes.
