Sacagawea was around 16 years old when she gave birth to her first child, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, in February 1805.
At the time, Sacagawea was accompanying the Lewis and Clark expedition. Her age at childbirth was not uncommon for young women in her time, as many indigenous women often became mothers in their teenage years. Sacagawea’s experience as a young mother added a unique aspect to her role in the expedition, showcasing her strength and resilience. She not only navigated the challenges of motherhood but also contributed significantly to the expedition’s success by providing valuable knowledge and support.
