Edgar Allan Poe was only three years old when his mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, passed away. She died of tuberculosis on December 8, 1811. Poe’s early life was marked by tragedy, as he lost both of his parents at a very young age. After the death of his mother, he was separated from his siblings and taken in by John and Frances Allan, a couple from Richmond, Virginia. This early loss had a profound effect on Poe’s life and work, influencing many of the themes of death and loss that permeate his poetry and stories.
