Amelia Earhart was 39 years old when she disappeared on July 2, 1937. She was declared dead on January 5, 1939, after an extensive search failed to locate her or her plane. Earhart was a pioneering aviator and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Her disappearance remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.
