Hippos have a single stomach, much like humans and other non-ruminant animals. Unlike cows and some other herbivores that have multiple stomach compartments to aid in digesting tough plant material, hippos digest their food using a more straightforward process.
Their stomach is quite large and can hold a significant amount of food, which is essential since hippos mainly graze on grass. They consume around 80 pounds of it in a single night! While their digestive system is efficient, it is not as specialized as that of some animals that need multiple stomachs to break down fibrous plant matter.
