Chloroplasts are surrounded by two membranes: an outer membrane and an inner membrane. The outer membrane is smooth and permeable to small molecules and ions, while the inner membrane folds into thylakoids, which are stacked in structures called grana. These membranes play essential roles in the chloroplast’s function, including the process of photosynthesis.
