The Christians won a total of two out of the nine major Crusades. The First Crusade (1096-1099) and the Third Crusade (1189-1192) are considered the most successful for the Christians. The First Crusade resulted in the capture of Jerusalem, while the Third Crusade, led by Richard the Lionheart, achieved significant territorial gains but did not retake Jerusalem. The other Crusades either ended in failure or achieved limited success. The Crusades were a series of religious wars initiated by the Latin Church in the medieval period, primarily aimed at reclaiming the Holy Land from Muslim control.
