How Many Bones Are in the Skull?

The human skull is made up of 22 bones. These bones can be divided into two main categories: the cranial bones and the facial bones.

The cranial bones, which protect the brain, consist of 8 bones: the frontal bone, parietal bones (2), occipital bone, temporal bones (2), and the sphenoid and ethmoid bones. The remaining 14 bones make up the facial skeleton, which includes the nasal bones, maxillae, zygomatic bones, mandible, and others.

Understanding the structure of the skull is essential for various fields, including medicine, anthropology, and art. It not only serves a protective function for the brain but also supports the face and provides attachment points for muscles used in chewing and facial expressions.
