Malcolm X’s mother, Louise Little, died on December 28, 1991, due to complications stemming from a heart condition. Throughout her life, she faced numerous challenges, including the struggles of raising her children alone after her husband was murdered and experiencing severe racial discrimination.
In the early 1930s, she was placed in a mental institution, which left a significant impact on Malcolm and his siblings. Her mental health issues were exacerbated by the trauma she experienced, particularly after the violent death of her husband, Earl Little, who was murdered because of his activism as an outspoken supporter of Black rights. Following her institutionalization, Malcolm and his family faced immense hardships, which shaped his views on race and injustice.
Despite the difficulties she encountered, Malcolm always held deep respect and love for his mother. In his autobiography, he reflects on her strength and resilience, highlighting the significant role she played in shaping his identity and beliefs.
