In Greek mythology, Ares, the god of war, did not have a definitive death. Unlike mortal beings, gods in Greek mythology are immortal and do not die in the traditional sense. However, there are stories where Ares faced significant challenges and was temporarily incapacitated.
One notable instance is when the Aloadae giants, Otus and Ephialtes, captured Ares and imprisoned him in a bronze jar for thirteen months. He was eventually rescued by Hermes, the messenger god, after Eriboea, the giants’ stepmother, informed Hermes of Ares’ plight.
Another story involves Ares being wounded by the mortal hero Diomedes during the Trojan War. With the help of Athena, Diomedes managed to stab Ares with his spear, causing the god to retreat to Mount Olympus to heal his wounds.
These stories highlight Ares’ vulnerabilities and the fact that, while he could be injured or temporarily subdued, he could not be killed. His immortality ensures that he remains a constant presence in the pantheon of Greek gods.
