Are Amharic and Ge’ez the Same Language?

Amharic and Ge’ez are not the same language, although they are closely related. Ge’ez is an ancient Semitic language that was once widely spoken in the Kingdom of Aksum, which is now modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is no longer a spoken language but is still used as the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

Amharic, on the other hand, is a modern Semitic language that evolved from Ge’ez. It is the official language of Ethiopia and is spoken by millions of people as a first or second language. While Amharic has borrowed many words and grammatical structures from Ge’ez, it has also developed its own unique features over time.

In summary, Ge’ez is the ancient precursor to Amharic, but they are distinct languages with different roles in Ethiopian and Eritrean society today.
