Definition, Meaning & Synonyms
codominance
noun
/ˌkoʊˈdɒmɪnəns/
Definition
Codominance is a genetic phenomenon where both alleles in a heterozygote are fully expressed, resulting in offspring with a phenotype that is neither dominant nor recessive.
Examples
- In a flower with red and white petals, if the red and white alleles show codominance, the petals may be striped or have patches of both colors.
- In blood types, the A and B alleles are codominant, resulting in AB blood type when both are present.
- If a person inherits a black-feather gene from one parent and a white-feather gene from another, they may end up with chickens that have both black and white feathers.
Meaning
In codominance, neither allele masks the other; instead, both contribute to the individual’s traits.
