Molly Pitcher, whose real name was Mary Ludwig Hays, is often remembered for her courageous actions during the American Revolutionary War. Her husband, William Hays, was a soldier in the Continental Army. He served as a cannon-loader during the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.
During the heat of battle, William was gravely injured when he collapsed, affected by the intense fighting and possibly by the heat. As the fight continued, Molly took his place, bravely loading and firing his cannon while also bringing water to the weary soldiers. Unfortunately, William Hays later succumbed to his wounds, making Molly’s contributions even more significant as she assumed both roles in the absence of her husband.
