Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most famous landmarks, has a history marked by destruction and reconstruction. The castle has been destroyed twice in its history.
The first destruction occurred in 1615 during the Summer Siege of Osaka. This was a significant battle between the Tokugawa shogunate and the Toyotomi clan. The castle was set on fire during the conflict, leading to its complete destruction.
The second destruction happened during World War II. In 1945, the castle was bombed by American forces, causing significant damage to the main tower and other structures.
Despite these destructions, Osaka Castle has been rebuilt each time. The current structure, which stands today, was reconstructed in 1931 and underwent major renovations in 1997 to restore its historical appearance.
